President’s Message Summer 2013

Lisa M. Kohr RN, MSN, CPNP-AC/PC, MPH, PhD (c)

Welcome to the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses! This has been an exciting year for our organization. We had a successful meeting hosted by the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Nursing leaders in the field presented their experience and the current outcomes on infants, children and adults with single ventricle heart disease. Members also enjoyed networking, a tour of the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and poster presentations by the LA Children’s nursing staff. In addition, SPCN was well represented at the 2012 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions this year sharing their expertise at “How To”, Specialty, and Plenary sessions. Members were also invited to attend the Pediatric CV Nurse Research luncheon led by Nancy Pike. Attendees shared their ideas, triumphs and barriers to conducting research as well as discussed ideas for future collaborative projects.

SPCN was also well represented at the 2013 World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery held in Cape Town, South Africa.  We thank the South African Nurses Association, Lynda Bleasard (nurse leader for the Organizing Committee), Di Robertshaw from Great Britain as well as Mary Rummell and Sandy Straveski from the U.S. for their contributions to the program. Educational sessions focused on presenting the international perspective on issues affecting the pediatric cardiovascular population. Attendees were able to come together as a community of leaders at a number of formal and informal venues to network, share narrative about their work, and exchange ideas.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2014 SPCN meeting held in conjunction with the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions held in Dallas, Texas. We have a wonderful educational program planned. Additional details regarding the meeting can be found on the home page of the website as well in the newsletter.

SPCN is committed to making this organization for its member! We are continuing to update the functionality of the SPCN website. Members will now have access to the online newsletter, membership directory, AHA abstracts, upcoming conferences, employment opportunities and SPCN membership survey contact information. New activities include a collaborative project with PCICS that will provide infant and pediatric guidelines for the management health issues affecting the CV population. I welcome any feedback or suggestions you have to make this organization even more successful. Please feel free to contact me at
