Important SPCN News: 2015 Ballot and Key Facts for Annual Meeting

A reminder to vote and renew your membership!
Dues can be paid online through PayPal. At the same time you can update your membership profile! If you do not remember your user name or password, there are help screens available. You can even change your use name. For most of you, your user name was your email address at the time you initially joined SPCN. Give this email address a try if you are trying to change your user name! Once you have changed your information be sure to SAVE the changes with the Update button at the bottom of the page!

It is also time for our Annual Meeting and Educational Program. The AHA meeting is in Orlando so the SPCN Meeting will be at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital on November 7, 2015. The Newsletter has been sent! Did you receive it? If not, let us know. The meeting will be from 2pm to 6pm with the Educational Program starting at 2:30 pm. _____ Gwen Rempel is the current SPCN Vice President. She has been an SPCN member since 1989 when she was working in pediatric cardiology at BC Children’s Hospital, Vancouver, Canada as a head nurse and then as a clinical nurse specialist after completing her MSN in 1993. Since 1999, she has been associated with Stollery Children’s Hospital, Edmonton, Canada, through her doctoral dissertation research and as a nursing faculty member at the University of Alberta. Gwen loves mentoring pediatric cardiology nurses through research collaborations and opportunities to present research findings at international conferences. She is indebted to the nurse leaders of SPCN who have mentored her and she envisions extending her influence through formal involvement in this organization that she loves and supports. Gwen has recently joined Athabasca University, Canada’s online university, as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Disciplines that includes the Centre for Nursing and Health Studies. Gwen is a member of the Council of Cardiovascular Nursing and recently contributed to the development of a scientific statement from the American Heart Association on diagnosis and treatment of fetal cardiac disease. Gwen is also a member of the International Family Nursing Association and the World Association for Infant Mental Health.

_____ Barbara Gross RN, MSN, NEA-BC , Director of the Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). I have worked at CHLA for 39 years, but have been with the Heart Institute for 23 years. I have been a member of many professional organizations, including the American Nurse’s Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, American Heart Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgery and SPCN for many years. In my current role I also serve as an Advisor to the Nurse Practitioner Professional Ladder Committee at CHLA. I am very excited to become more involved in SPCN, our professional organization. Barbara hosted the 2012 SPCN Annual Meeting and Education Program at CHLA.

______Mary Heitschmidt, RN, APN, PhD, CCRN is currently a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in the Center for Congenital Heart Disease, at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Research is the major focus of Mary’s role as CNS. She has been actively involved in device, drug, and animal studies related to congenital cardiology for over 15 years. Mary received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After graduation from the University of Illinois, she completed a nursing internship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. She received her Master’s in Nursing from St. Xavier University, in Chicago. Mary received a Certificate in Clinical Trials Management from the University of Chicago, Graham School of General Studies. Sherecei ved her PhD from Rush University. Her work focuses on Quality of Life in Adult Patients with Congenital Heart Disease. She is a member of the Institutional Review Board, the Nursing Research Committee, and the College of Nursing Faculty at Rush University Medical Center. Mary is also a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Heart Association and Council on Cardiovascular Nursing, the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN), The Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA), International Society for Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ISACHD), the Chicago Adult Congenital Heart (CATCH) Network, St. Daniel the Prophet Parish Nurses, and Sigma Theta Tau- Alpha Lambda Chapter. She has been an author of many articles and has presented nationally and internationally at conferences throughout her career.
